After all, what you eat and how you live when you’re young will influence how you look when you’re older.

Let me ask (for verification), do you want to look fresh and stay young in years? Of course, most of us do.

Imagine you attended a party, then you have that one friend who looks younger than her actual age, you can’t help but find out about her secret formula.

You want to know her anti-aging routine, her must-have skincare products, her daily rituals, so on and so forth. You simply can’t get enough of it.

“Looking Younger is a Good Sign of our Overall Health”

I understand you are excited to look younger. Who wouldn’t? When it has fun and entertaining perks. For example, you’re more likely to get away with something, and you’ll have more childlike freebies than others.

Plus, you can shop in the children’s section without being judged. You’re more fated to get a straw in cafes, you can date young folks, and you’ll still have your unlimited student discount (I’m dying to experience this one).

Who wouldn’t love those perks? Kidding aside, looking younger is a good sign of our overall health.

That’s the reason why I came up writing these simple, practical, and proven ways to prevent and reduce aging.

Anti-aging Skincare Tips

1. Use a gentle face cleanser like this one.

Cleansing is necessary to remove any makeup or skincare products accumulated throughout the day and natural skin oils, toxins, and bacteria. If you wear makeup, it’s better to double cleanse at night by initially using a cleansing oil like KLAIRS Gentle Black Deep Cleansing Oil (find in Canada or the USA).

It is a mild cleansing oil composed of various plant oils that effectively deep cleanse dirt from pores and makeup without causing irritation. Formulated with black bean oil, black sesame oil, black currant seed oil that help controls sebum production and soothe skin.

What I love most about it is it’s vegan, and free from cruelty, ethanol, paraben, silicon, steroid, artificial coloring, and artificial fragrance.

Cleansing also ensures that your skincare products can penetrate your skin and function properly.

Picking up a milder facewash can be tricky, but here are some things to watch out for; avoid harsh surfactants, look for cleansers with a low PH (lower than 6), and cleansers that have moisturizing properties are better. [1,2]

2. Start using collagen and retinoids. Hello, your highness!

Collagen, the protein in our dermis that keeps skin smooth and lifted, will deplete over time. This loss can cause a creased appearance and signs of aging starts to occur.

Since it’s located in the deeper layer of our skin, any skincare products will have a hard time stimulating our collagen. That’s the reason why I prefer the ingestion way of getting collagen.

Yes, you heard it right. We can ingest collagen. I take the hydrolyzed powder form for better absorption and I incorporate it into my coffee or smoothie. This Hydrolyzed Collagen Peptide powder (find it in the USA, or in Canada) is what I would recommend.

I love that they’re unflavored, non-GMO verified, and with 18 amino acids including glycine, proline & hydroxyproline – nutrients needed to ensure the health and vitality of your skin, hair, tendon, cartilage, bones, and joints.

Now as per retinoids use, according to experts, the safest way to protect yourself is to take it, it’s a prescription-strength form of vitamin A. Retinoid is royalty when it comes to skincare.

It helps cure acne, soften wrinkles, fade pigmentation, and give the skin a youthful glow by encouraging cellular turnover and stimulating collagen. [3]

But did you know that there’s a natural alternative to it? The plant-based ingredient is called Bakuchiol. It functions similar to retinol without the negative effects like redness, dryness, sun sensitivity, and peeling.

Get ahold of these Bakuchiol Beauties

  • This Bakuchiol serum that’s available in the US synergistically blends with squalane, aloe vera, pomegranate, and lavender to target and enhance signs of aging such as wrinkles, fine lines, dark spots, sun spots, brightness, firmness, and elasticity.
  • While this Bakuchiol face oil that is made and can be found in Canada also contains avocado (Vitamin C), argan oil, rosehip, and vitamin E help to moisturize, hydrate skin, reduce the appearance of age spots, wrinkles, and fine lines with non-oily feel.

3. Pat, don’t rub! It’s a sin for your skin.

Patting is typically more gentle than rubbing in skin-care products because it reduces the risk of pulling or dragging the skin.

It is preferable because there is less pressure. On the other hand, rubbing increases friction, which can be irritating to the skin, particularly around the eyes.

The Japanese have long practiced this art of pat don’t rub. According to J-Beauty, it is gentle, it is better for your lymph system, it is excellent for the eye and other thin skin areas, and it gives your skin a more concentrated dose — your skin gets to drink up.  [4,5]

4. Moisturize to infinity and beyond.

Sebum production decreases with age. Although this reduces the likelihood of acne, it also makes the skin more prone to drying out.

Inadequate skin hydration is one of the leading causes of fine lines, but it’s a problem you can quickly solve using a good moisturizer.

Moisturizing is vital for maintaining the health of your skin’s cells and protecting it from irritation. You will reduce the chance of developing skin problems by moisturizing your skin as an important step in your anti-aging skincare. Friendly reminder, use moisturizers with water-binding components; it’s less greasy.  [1]

A great moisturizer must be both hydrating and moisturizing

Among the amazing face moisturizers with these hydrating and moisturizing properties that you can include in your anti-aging skincare are; Natural & Organic Ocean Mineral Facial Moisturizer (USA), and this Face Cream Anti-aging Hydration (Canada).

Their ingredients are incredible and give skin the moisture it needs to look firm, bright, and youthful. They also contain botanical extracts and lightweight plant oils as occlusives to trap moisture onto the skin.

5. Enhance your SFP game plan. It is a must in anti-aging skincare.

Putting on sunscreen, like combing your hair, should be an inbuilt part of your daily routine, whether it’s raining or shining.

As suggested, it’s best to use sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to keep your skin healthy, prevent age spots and skin discoloration caused by the sun — photoaging.

Here’s a trivia, sunscreen decreases skin aging by amazingly 24 percent (that’s a significant number). It is based on a new study published in the Annals of Internal Medicines.

Therefore, wearing sunscreen not only makes you look younger but also makes your skin less wrinkled. Also, apply it to the backs of your hands, like the face. It shows signs of aging before the rest of your body. [6,7]

There are a lot of different types of sunscreen in the market but my personal preference is the mineral type. You know why? It’s because it doesn’t absorb UV rays.

Mineral sunscreens are called “reflectors” or physical blockers because they form a protective barrier on the skin and reflect harmful UV rays before they make contact with the skin’s surface.

3 of the Best Mineral Sunscreens

  • EltaMD UV Clear Facial Sunscreen Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 (available in the USA) – this facial sunscreen is oil-free and is recommended by dermatologists because it helps calm and protects sensitive skin types prone to acne, rosacea, and discoloration. It is lightweight, sheer, and silky that contains ingredients that the appearance of healthy-looking skin.
  • La Roche-Posay Sunscreen Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 50 (available in Canada) – contains a filter of 100% mineral origin and has been rigorously formulated. It was tested under dermatological control. It’s great that it’s fragrance-free, paraben-free, and non-comedogenic. A plus because it’s water-resistant and has a weightless texture that quickly penetrates, leaving the skin matte.
  • Banana Boat Mineral Sunscreen for KIDS SPF 50 (available in the USA, and Canada) – it is a mild, tear-free formula to protect kids from damaging UVA/UVB. Specifically designed to feel lightweight and easy to rub in. A gentle, and water-resistant sunscreen that is best for kids.

6. Don’t forget to exfoliate. A recommended anti-aging skincare step especially for mature skin. Say bye-bye, dead skin!

Our skin sheds old dead skin cells and regenerates a new layer every 28 days to reveal fresh new smooth skin. But for older skin, it takes 6 weeks to shed it off. It slows down with time, resulting in dull skin and rough patches.

To help minimize buildup, exfoliate regularly for brighter skin.

Exfoliation aids in unclogging pores and helps other skincare products penetrate deeper to improve blood circulation and stimulate collagen synthesis. [1,8]

I discuss exfoliation in-depth in this post where you will learn why it is important, who should do it, how often should you exfoliate, and more exfoliation tips.

Basically everything you need to know why this is a crucial step in your anti-aging skincare routine.

There’s also confusion about which type of exfoliants to use; physical or chemical exfoliation? It has been tackled in this post to help you decide which is the right one for you.

7. Watch what you eat; it’s who you are.

What goes on your plate is just as important as what goes on your skin. Everything you eat becomes a part of not only your inner being but also your outer surface.

Your skin reflects your health inside. The healthier the food you consume, the healthier your skin will look.

Take an antioxidant supplement or make antioxidant-rich food like carrots, sweet potatoes, apricots, tomatoes, spinach, berries, beans, salmon, quinoa, and nuts part of your diet. [9,10]

Also, drink plenty of water, at least 3 to 4 liters a day, to avoid dehydration. Dehydration makes the skin look wrinkled and saggy, as well as older.

Water flushes toxins from the body and keeps your internal organs functioning properly.

8. Consider adding supplements to your diet. Add to cart now.

There’s no denying that healthy skin starts from the inside out.  Pretty sure you can recall a period when you ate and drank severely for a few days, and the consequences showed up on your face as dullness, dehydration, and blemishes.

Although eating a well-balanced and nutritious diet is an essential part of your anti-aging skincare, complementing your diet with a skin supplement can also be beneficial.

When the right dietary supplement is paired up with a good diet, it can keep your skin not only healthy but young-looking. [11]

Here are more skin-friendly insights to enjoy about anti-aging skincare!

Since our skin is our primary line of defense against infection, proper skin care is essential. Making sure our skin is safe and moisturized aids in the maintenance of this barrier.

When the skin becomes dry or irritated by harsh soaps, cracks can form. Cracks in a person’s skin make them more vulnerable to infection. Be on guard.

Another friendly reminder, it is also essential to look after the rest of your body too.

It is not just taking good care of the surface, but it should be a partnership between the inside and out.

Other considerable factors like emotional and psychological stress can cause aging, not only too much UVA exposure.

Therefore, putting these anti-aging skincare tips into action and taking care of your emotional health is the best tandem to fight off aging. [12]

I waited till I reached my 30s to get serious about SPF, and I still regret it! While my skin texture has improved a lot, and I definitely have very little fine lines and deep wrinkles for someone pushing 40, I still have hyperpigmentation and freckles on my skin that are stubbornly not budging. Sun damage is real, people! Slap on the sunscreen!

Sunscreen indeed is very important to delay skin aging. For the hyperpgmentation, Adriana, have you tried skincare products with niacinamide? It’s a powerhouse ingredients that targets a lot of skin issues. 🙂

I happen to get ahold of raw bakuchiol ingredient and jumped quickly to formulating an anti aging cream. I’ve posted a short video and an image of the final product on my IG @rizbeau, if you want to check it out.

I use this lightweight cream and I’m thankful I don’t have to suffer face irritation, or redness and still get tha same benefit like with retinol. You should try it 😀.
